The Sitting Duck

Each and every workplace is infested with a substantial population of peers and subordinates (at times superiors as well) who are ready to stab you at the back or derail your work plans and efforts. This is mainly because they perceive you as their threat or competition or for that matter, they envy at your superlative performance or your superior capabilities.

You are hard working, honest, dedicated and apolitical. You also strongly believe in God and hope that He will protect you against such misdeeds of your peers or subordinates because your religion had taught you so from the childhood, 'You reap what you sow!'. So, keeping your strong faith in Him, you do nothing to defend yourself; and they smoothly execute their plan. You are stabbed at your back before you could realise.

You lose the confidence of your boss, the support from your peers and even the respect of the subordinates, courtesy the efforts of your nemesis. You suffer, you sigh but you do nothing as you take it as your destiny. As the situation deteriorates, very quickly you lose your passion for your work, your faith in God, the trust in your core values like honesty and integrity. Thus you place your first step in the path of self-pity leading to self-destruction. Very soon you slip down the ladder from one of the high performers to a non-entity.

Is God to be blamed for all your sufferings because he did nothing to protect you in spite of your unflinching faith in Him? Is God blind to those who caused you harm and went scot-free? Do you think your action or rather inaction is justified and hence you are not at fault at all?

My friend, unfortunately you are because, in spite of knowing the sinister plan of your antagonists, you did not do anything to defend yourself. You left everything to God and prayed or hoped for the best. This is where you erred. You have to defend yourself against the evils. It is your duty and you have to perform it. Don't expect the Almighty to do it on your behalf. Pretty much the same way as at work place where you do not expect your boss to do your work.

So, in our professional lives, it is important to be alert against the negative forces while we perform our duties with honesty, sincerity and integrity. It is okay to fight back in self-defence.
