If you played soccer, recall what the coach taught you always - passing the ball frequently to strategically positioned team players is more effective than dribbling it alone against eleven players of the rival team to score a goal, unless you are a Messi or Ronaldo, the modern age superstars.
If you are a selfish forward player focused on scoring all the goals yourself in order to attain glory in every match, you will tend to dribble more because you do not want to lose possession of the ball near the rival team’s penalty area. Before you can realize, the ball is snatched away by the rival defence every time you plan to move ahead and score the goal yourself. In the meantime, you teammates scream repeatedly at you to pass the ball and later on end up cursing you.
Similarly, when your penalty arena is getting raided by the opposite team, the midfielders and the forward players of your team quickly fall back to support your defence players protect your citadel. The resistance thus becomes more impregnable and you succeed in fending off the challenge from the opposition. What would happen if the forward players don’t move back to support their defence? Concession of goal after goal thus losing the match!
A game of soccer is a classic demonstration of teamwork and team spirit. The team which exhibits better teamwork along with good strategy, planning and execution, wins the game. A team comprising of selfish players will lose repeatedly and it doesn’t take much time for the team management to get rid of such players.
The professional world is no different. Teamwork clubbed with other attributes helps a team to achieve bigger and bigger goals at the workplace and make them shine. With success comes the reward and recognition. Therefore a successful leader will always aim at creating the spirit of teamwork in his group, exactly the way a successful coach does to his soccer team.
If the leader himself does not possess that trait and conviction towards teamwork, if he is more focused on creating glory for himself and in that effort tries not to involve his team, then he will be left alone to accomplish the critical tasks – like the selfish soccer player trying to dribble the ball against eleven players. He is surely bound to fail, he will never be able to score a goal and on top of that, he will leave his team frustrated, disillusioned and demoralized.
A successful leader in the professional world is like the good coach or the captain of a spirited soccer team who is capable of inculcating the spirit of teamwork along with other good traits. He will be as good or bad as the team that he leads. So, the onus is on him to indoctrinate the right attributes in each and every member of his team and more importantly the spirit of teamwork.
