We all desire to have a work-life balance but somehow end up sacrificing it for the sake of our professional goals, persistent pressure & demand from our bosses, guilt feeling about not working too hard and for the fear of leaving the career ambitions in the back burner. Like the snow leopard in high altitude mountains, work-life balance seems to be elusive.
How do we achieve the work-life balance? These 10 steps should help in our endeavor.
1. Don’t carry work and stress home. Leave them in the drawers of your office. Remind this to yourself every day at least once.
2. Stop checking, reading and replying official emails at least two hours prior to bed-time and immediately after waking up in the morning. This will ensure a good quota of solid, sound sleep and freshen up your morning mood.
3. Don’t make a habit of sitting late in office just because your boss expects you to do this. If there is no urgent work, leave for home on time. Your family is eagerly waiting for you.
4. Go for at least two vacations in a year - you and your family need it. Your organization will not collapse if you aren't there. While on vacation, don't carry your laptop and switch off your office mobile phone.
5. Schedule your physical fitness regime and follow it religiously. You have to find time to take care of your health and well-being. Don't necessarily have to go to the gym. A walk in the park - fresh air, greenery and a little bit of sweat can rejuvenate you.
6. Develop a healthy eating habit. Client entertainment, seminars, office get-together etc. means consuming high-calorie food and alcoholic beverages at regular interval. This is a recipe for a bagful of illnesses.
7. Learn to disconnect your heart from your head as regards to office matters i.e. learn not to get emotionally affected by the developments at the workplace. Control your emotions or rather shut them out completely while dealing with a screaming boss or customer, retrenching your workforce in order to cut down cost, handling peer politics, getting the news of losing a big tender or a failed project execution etc. It is easier said than done. But this is achievable with sincere effort and it makes one’s life much better and manageable.
8. Engage with your children in their games and study – this is a big stress buster and will rejuvenate your mind.
9. Pursue your hobby - Reading/music/writing/weekend trekking/charity work engagement/anything that brings a smile on your face.
10. We are always confined to a four-walled 'boxed life' be it the office, the car you travel in or the small apartment where you live. Wriggle out of the ‘boxed-life’ trap, life outside it is beautiful. Feel it, immerse in it.
