Different Types of Bosses and Their Key Traits

Every boss is different from the other in some aspect or other. It is quite challenging to categorise different types of leaders in a few brackets because there are so many variations. However, if I am to classify, below are the broad categories:

(1) Mr Bully: He knows everything, does not have time to listen to anyone, gives his decisions randomly, blames his team for every failure and destroys their morale. His motto - my way or highway. So, this gentleman is an epitome of arrogance who thinks no one is as smart as him and he can’t do anything wrong. But the moment things go wrong, he will quickly jump-in to heap all the blames on his team in an effort to keep his slate clean. And he will be almost shameless in doing so. Those who speak up in protest will not survive long as such leader will quickly plot their ouster or destruction. Those subordinates who prefer to keep quiet in order to safeguard their jobs suffer in silence. Such type of leader hardly does anything for the benefit of his team members. He is always focused on placing himself in the limelight, pocketing all the credits and recognition.

(2) Mr Micromanager: You will find this trait in many bosses. Such a person is generally well competent and knowledgeable. However, his concern is – if he isn’t involved in everything and if he does not supervise every task, then his team will end up making blunders. He generally would not develop confidence in the competency of his team members.

Leaders who are micromanagers always get challenged w.r.t. time management and multi-tasking. As he involves in every task, trying to lead and guide all, he invariably runs out of time, at times missing key deadlines. The other problem he faces is – he finds it very challenging to do multi-tasking. As he can’t delegate down the order, he ends up owning responsibility for all the assignments and ends up with a big struggle to complete all. Results have to be compromised at the end as deadlines have to be met with.

(3) Mr Hands-off: He is someone who expects his team to do everything on their own and not to trouble him. He empowers them to a great extent which is good in the sense that individuals can exercise their ideas and strategies while executing their tasks, thereby obtaining a sense of achievement under his leadership. He is the type of leader who would praise his teams for delivering what is expected out of them and give them their due recognition. But some leaders in this category would also not hesitate to put all the blame on his team in case of failure and try to keep his image clean in the eyes of the higher management.

(4) Mr Incompetent: How many times have you come across bosses who are good for nothing? We all have good experiences to share, having worked under such individuals. You go to such leader for guidance and he will immediately snap at you, ‘Who had hired you in this organization? Why do you come to me for every small thing?’

He won’t give you any solution because he doesn’t have any. But he will make you feel sorry for going to him for such a trivial matter and you may doubt your own competency, hearing his caustic remark.

At best, such type of leader will get involved for a very brief moment, confuse the entire team with his incoherent suggestions and ideas and leave the meeting room and the rest of the team totally tatters. All the good work that the team had done so far will be ground to dust by him in a few minutes.

(5) Mr Perfect: Highly competent, smart and intelligent, a person who can multi-task and does not yield to pressure in challenging business situations. He leads his team very efficiently, knows how to get the best out of his team members who have different levels of skill sets and competency.

He is a motivator, knows how to keep the spirit of his team always high. He treats his subordinates as his family members and does his best to help them in their personal problems also. He would not hesitate to become strict with his team when it is required but at the same time, he does not use his power and position to boss over his people. He would also stand up and fiercely protect his team in front of his peers or senior management.

You are always ready to go beyond the call of the duty to fulfil his expectations because you know very well that rest will be taken care by him, be it your career progression, salary hike or personal issues. He is the dream boss of everyone.
