Small Gestures from a Boss that Employees Love: How to be a Good Boss

Every employee may not be a star performer but is a hard working individual who endeavours to put in his best. In spite of that, he has to cope up with the constant pressure of 'Perform or Perish' and the resultant fear of the unknown. The professional world is tough, demanding and very challenging. In such an environment few small acts from his manager can make a world of difference.
  1. An occasional pat on the back with an assuring smile.
  2. Simple appreciations or compliments like - 'keep up the hard work', 'you are doing good.'
  3. A patient hearing from the manager when an employee desires to share about the challenges faced while executing a task can act as a soothing balm. Most of them are used to getting criticism or admonition from their manager when tasks are not performed up to his expectation.
  4. Being treated with empathy. Caring comments like 'Go home now and spend time with your family', 'How is your mother's health these days? Take care of her.' etc. can have so much positive impact.
  5. Encouragement to avail annual leaves and go for vacation with family rather than always being criticised for falling behind the target delivery dates and being pushed to stay late in office.
  6. Treating the subordinates with respect. Quite a common thing to notice that the bosses take it as their right to be rude to their subordinates. There is a fine line between being critical about performance/deliverables and being rude - don't cross it. If you treat your team with respect, you will be genuinely respected in return.

It costs nothing for a manager to inculcate such positive behaviour and approach towards his team members but unfortunately not a large % of individuals in leadership roles adopt this aspect.

If your present or past manager is one such individual who has/had made a significant positive impact in your work life, how about dropping him/her a 'thank you' note to express your gratitude?
