Fresh Graduates & the Current Job Situation

COVID-19 and the global recession have created havoc all over the world. Every industry is suffering, there have been massive layoffs every day and opportunities are drying out with the blink of an eye!

In this turmoil, the dreamy-eyed fresh graduates straight out of colleges have got caught completely off-guard and unprepared. Advance offer letters from the companies issued after campus interviews are put on hold, advertisements/interviews/tests for recruitment of fresh graduates are not to be seen, emails & applications seeking jobs are not being responded to.

Many of these fresh graduates have education-loan instalments to pay, mortgaged assets of their parents to be freed up. Their parents are equally anxious not knowing how to overcome this nightmare and help/guide their frustrated children.

It is indeed a very difficult situation. Till the pandemic disease is brought under control and the global economy makes a turnaround, the job situation isn't going to improve much. So, what is it that fresh graduates should do in order to stay afloat?

Though there may not be any magic solution, there are a few things that one can consider:

1. Temporary/part-time engagements - do not hesitate to take up any kind of job that may not match up to your educational qualification. But it will certainly help you with some cash flow and keep you busy.

2. Assist your parents if they have their own business, farming activity, etc.

3. If you can afford financially, upgrade your educational qualifications and professional skills through online courses. It will increase your market value for the future.

4. Do not lose hope and keep your job search on. You never know when a good opportunity will come knocking at your door.

5. A word of caution - don’t fall prey to the fake recruitment agents lurking in the market, promising lucrative salary and postings abroad especially in the Middle East. There are many horror stories of such fake agents cheating gullible young job seekers. Always connect with the reputed and established recruitment agents.

6. 'An idle mind is devil's workshop.' Keep yourself busy with your hobby or any other activity rather than sitting idle and brooding over your ill luck. It will help control and manage the frustrations and depressions.

Easier said than done but do not lose hope and do not give up. Better days will come!
